The Hudson Valley, NY is steeped in history, timeless architecture, and breathtaking landscapes. Growing up here, you always hear names like Kykuit, Lyndhurst, Sunnyside, Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt—all reminders of the region’s cultural and architectural heritage. These iconic estates have shaped both the skyline and the memories of those of us who call the Hudson Valley home.

While I had often heard of Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, I had never personally visited until I had the privilege of photographing Katie & Korey’s engagement session this past spring. I was not prepared for the magnitude of just how incredible this place really was.

From the moment you pass through the cast iron gates and cross the iconic stone bridge, Vanderbilt Mansion feels like you’ve stepped back into the romance of the Gilded Age. Whether it’s the carved stone details, the pillared porticos, or the perfectly landscaped gardens, every corner of the estate blends history, elegance, and romance making it a perfect setting for an engagement session or wedding portraits in the Hudson Valley.

Katie & Korey’s session reminded me of how lucky we are to be in such a historically and scenically rich area. Vanderbilt Mansion is more than just a beautiful park, it’s a canvas for romance and history to meet, perfect for couples who want engagement photos that feel both iconic and deeply personal.

If you’re planning an engagement session or wedding portraits in the Hudson Valley, consider Vanderbilt Mansion. Its blend of historic architecture, romantic gardens, and breathtaking river views makes it a location you’ll never forget—and one that will bring your love story to life in photographs for years to come.

Locations

When it comes to Hudson Valley engagement photography, Vanderbilt Mansion stands out for its variety, beauty, and timeless character. Here are a few of the best spots on the grounds and why they work so well for photos:

  • The Grand Terrace: Dramatic river views and golden hour perfection for sweeping portraits.

  • Stone Balustrades & Staircases: Clean architectural lines that add elegance and depth.

  • The Italian Gardens: Colorful, intimate spaces for close-ups and romantic details.

  • Tree-Lined Driveways & Meadows: Soft light and natural scenery for playful, candid shots.

Pro Tips for a Vanderbilt Mansion Engagement Session

  • Best Time of Day: Either early morning before 11am or Golden hour (the hour before sunset) provides the most flattering light and adds warmth to the estate’s stone and river views.

  • Best Season: Spring and fall are especially beautiful, with blossoms in the gardens and vibrant foliage on the terrace. Winter sessions can also be magical with fewer crowds.

  • Weekdays Over Weekends: The mansion gets busy with tours, especially May through August. Plan for a weekday or off-season visit for a quieter, more intimate experience.

  • What to Wear: Flowy dresses and classic neutrals pair beautifully with the grand architecture. Comfortable shoes are helpful for exploring the gardens and walking the grounds.

  • Permits: At the time of this publication the park no longer requires photography permits for groups smaller than 8 people as long as the photoshoot is unobtrusive to other guests and doesn't utilize heavy equipment.
